What Is Synthetic Oil?

The concept of synthetic oil is getting very popular in recent times. When certain chemical compounds are added in crude petroleum to enhance its performance, the resultant is called synthetic oil. This artificially created oil has been used in place of lubricant oil and petroleum oil. Motor oil is the most commonly used synthetic oil.

The production of synthetic oil has its roots in the scarcity of petroleum. In this age of inflation, the price of petroleum is also rising rapidly. Hence, it was necessary for the scientists to have a ready alternative. Synthetic oil is one such substitute.

Since synthetic oil is man-made, scientists have grabbed this opportunity to make the most of it. They have tried their best to increase the chemical and mechanical potential of the fuel. It is way ahead of the conventional mineral oils in terms of its capability of producing power.

There are various ways of producing synthetic oil. One of the most popular ways is the Fischer Tropsch method. In this process, hydrocarbons are produced in its liquefied state. For producing this hydrocarbon, gases like methane, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide are utilized. Germany made use of this invention and used synthetic oil during the World War II. The lack of availability of crude oil had increased the production of synthetic oil in this era. Till today South Africa uses synthetic oil instead of diesel.

The other method of producing synthetic oil is the one used in Canada and Alberta's kcmq Syncrude sand plant. The production of synthetic oils has replaced market giants like viscous bitumen. Synthetic oil is formed with synthetic crude oil and its hydrogenation. Syncrude alone produces 14% of the total synthetic oil of Canada.

In the late 90s, synthetic oil was extensively used as an energy lubricant. API came out with the first plan of using synthetic oil and tasted commercial success. In the next couple of years, few more synthetic oil manufacturing companies came into existence.

There are various versions of synthetic oil that you can choose from. Some of them include the Amsoil, Mobil 1, and few others. The best part about synthetic oil is that it is compatible to gasoline engines, diesel, as well as petrol engines. There are certain pros and cons of using synthetic oil in place of the traditional fuel. You get a better control on the temperature and performance. Using synthetic oil will make your vehicle more stable. It is environment friendly in leaving minimal waste fuel.

The cost of changing the oil at regular intervals might be a little heavy on the pocket. Break-in becomes inconvenient if synthetic oil is used. Certain chemical environments show deterioration because of the use of synthetic oil. Most of these shortcomings are being dealt with lately.
